If you open my travel bag you will find multiple "Frequent traveler cards". I have every major hotel chain, every major airline alliance and every major rental car company. For sure I'm not top level in many or the majority of them but they create a closer relationship with the service provider. When you are in a hotel and you have their frequent guest number you already created a link that will land you a better room that you may had without that number. It creates a better and easier personal relationship with the person checking you in, giving you your boarding pass or giving you the car rental.
On the other hand remember that those memberships are free and even if the benefits are small all of them add up. I had used air miles to travel with my family, hotel points to stay in places like China in hotels way above what you would pay in a vacation.
The other part needed is just basic courtesy. A good morning, have a nice day or a thank you with a big smile take you way ahead of any other thing in life and in travel that is not an exception.
